St. Petersburg, Florida-- While celebrating the addition of sexual orientation to the St. Petersburg human rights ordinance, Equality Florida and the entire 25-member coalition of organizations that advocated for change remain committed to ensuring that gender identity be included in the city's anti-discrimination law.

Last Thursday the St. Petersburg City Council voted 6-2 to approve an amendment to the City's human rights ordinance, which protects people based on sexual orientation, but did not vote on including gender identity and expression.

At that public hearing, supportive leaders from civic, neighborhood, advocacy and religious organization filled the room to capacity. Nearly 50 people took time off work for the early morning hearing to tell City Council their commitment to inclusion is unwavering, and that the ordinance is incomplete without gender identity protections.

Seven of the eight members of City Council have made verbal or written pledges to support an ordinance that includes BOTH sexual orientation and gender identity.

Hundreds of letters, emails and phone calls, and a community coalition of 25 organizations have asked City Council members to honor their pledge.

The community coalition remains resolute and undivided. This coalition will return to the City Council to request that the members honor their pledge and pass an amendment to the human rights ordinance that protects transgender people.
