FREE 5K Run for HIVers

Why a FREE run / walk? My name is Richard Brodsky and I’m President of the Richard M. Brodsky Foundation. I’m HIV-positive for 12+ years, a brain cancer survivor for 7 years and a marathon runner for life. Running and the camaraderie of running with friendly upbeat runners has saved my life. I want to share this gift with as many people living with HIV and cancer as possible.

To participate in the inaugural FREE 5K Run / Walk for people living with HIV or cancer & friends, please write me at richardm.brodsky@gmail.com and I will E-mail or fax you an application. Applications need to be received by mail or fax, no later than Saturday, noon. The Run / Walk is limited to 100 people and I will advise you when you contact me if we have reached 100 participants. You will need to arrive at Oceanside Park on Sunday, October 25th between 7:30 and 8:30 AM to receive your running bib, and t-shirt while supplies last. You will need to sign up as a team of two people, one person is living with HIV or cancer and the other person is HIV-negative and cancer-free. If you need a partner, please indicate that on the application and I will provide you with a partner. All participants will be required to sign a release that they have been examined by their doctor and that he does not disapprove of them participating in a 5K Run / Walk. We will respect the privacy of people living with HIV or cancer unless the person prefers not to remain anonymous and wants to encourage others to run.

The Foundation’s sponsors will also provide bagels, wraps and heroes, bananas, apples, coffee, energy bars, munchkins, gelato, water, other goodies and trophies thanks to the following sponsors:

Oceanside 24 Hour Bagel
Pantano’s of Hewlett
Tamburinos Deli of Cedarhurst
Trader Joe’s of Hewlett
Starbucks of Oceanside
Dunkin Donuts of Lawrence
International Delight of Rockville Centre
Costco of Lawrence
Whole Foods Market of Manhasset
Stop and Shop of Oceanside
Martin Schwartz and Jodi Brodsky, trophies

The purpose of organizing these 5K runs is to get people living with HIV and cancer exercising. My Foundation can sponsor three – six of these FREE runs per year and the other six runs could be at other 5K Events on Long Island where the entry fees range from $10 – $20 per person and perhaps the Foundation could arrange for a group discount. These entry fees would need to be paid by the runners or walkers. For example, we have negotiated a $5 discount to run in the Mineola Mustang Run, November 15, for all participants who complete the 5K Oceanside Run. The only caveat is we will not receive an Event t-shirt.

To read more about the global work the Richard M. Brodsky Foundation is involved with, click here to visit website and you can see photos of the annual World AIDS Marathon in Kisumu, Kenya on World AIDS Day and its charitable work in Africa. Like the saying goes, ‘one picture is worth a thousand words; prepare to read a book when you visit the website. The Foundation’s Board Members and donors are very dedicated to helping others less fortunate. We are especially concerned about providing seed for orphans and their caretakers in Kenya so they can sow and reap their own fruits and vegetables. To learn more about the 5K AIDS / Cancer Run / Walk in America, read more on website. Donations can be made via either website. To help fund the 3 – 4 FREE runs, sponsors are invited to contribute $75 to have their name or $150 for a logo on the Event t-shirt. T-shirts have already been printed up; however your name or logo will appear on the next t-shirt my Foundation sponsors. Donations can also be mailed to Richard M. Brodsky Foundation, 1247 Mara Court, Atlantic Beach, NY 11509. All donations of $20 or more will be acknowledged with a Certificate of Appreciation
