LGBT Aging Focus Groups Launches in Louisville, Kentuky

Sage-600x600(Louisville, KY) The Fairness Campaign and its allies are launching a series of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) aging focus groups: “Can We Talk About Aging with Pride?” Friday, June 5, 8 p.m. at PLAY Dance Bar; Sunday, June 7, 2 p.m. at Metropolitan Community Church; and Monday, June 15, Noon at Gilda’s Club of Louisville. The focus groups are part of a multi-step process for Kentucky to acquire an affiliate of the national SAGE, Services and Advocacy for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Elders.

At each focus group open to anyone interested, facilitators will lead conversations that cover multiple topics as they specifically relate to the LGBT elder community: healthcare and long term care, mental health and well being, discrimination and abuse, relationships, social networks and familial connections, housing and transportation, retirement, and others. Data from the focus groups will be combined with information collected in an upcoming survey to determine the specific needs of Louisville and Kentucky’s LGBT elder community, and how a Kentucky SAGENet affiliate might best serve those needs.

Partnering agencies include the Fairness Campaign, ElderServe Inc., The Kentuckiana Regional Planning and Development Agency (KIPDA), Jewish Family and Career Services, Louisville Metro Office for Aging and Disabled Citizens, Lexington’s Senior Pride Initiative, Gilda’s Club Louisville, the Alzheimer’s Association, AARP, and more.
