Gay Fox News anchor blasts Trump over ‘false’ claims about media coverage of terrorist attacks

Fox News anchor is accusing US President Donald Trump and The White House of spreading fake news.

Shepard Smith blasted Trump and his team on Tuesday (7 February) for its claims that the media doesn’t want to report on terrorist attacks.

‘The president’s assertion is false,’ Smith said.

‘The White House knows that it was false or could have learned that it was false with a quick Google check, but either did not do so or decided not to tell the truth.’

Smith debunked a list of attacks the administration claims were underreported.

They included last summer’s Bastille Day attack in Nice, France, that left 84 dead and the mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, where 49 people were killed.

Smith pointed out that Fox News has extensively covered both attacks as well as a 2015 attack in Paris, France.

‘What they are saying is not true,’ Smith said.

During a speech on Monday at the United States Central Command Trump said: ‘You have seen what happened in Paris and Nice. All over Europe it’s happening. It’s gotten to a point where it’s not even being reported. And in many cases the very, very dishonest press doesn’t want to report it.’

The White House later issued a list of 78 terrorist attacks it claims were not covered by the media.

Smith joined a growing list of journalists who went public in challenging Trump’s claims which seem to be made to support his signing of an executive order banning travel from seven mostly Muslin countries.

The order is being challenged in court.

Smith said the administration is essentially saying to people: ‘Don’t listen to what is reported accurately, listen to our false assertions.’

Smith, 53, is the former host of Fox Report with Shepard Smith and Studio B weekdays on Fox News Channel. In October 2013, he became the host of Shepard Smith Reporting as well as the managing editor of Fox News Channel’s Breaking News Division.

He publicly acknowledged for the first time last fall that he is gay.
