Elton John describes George Michael as ‘one of the best vocalists ever’

Elton John honored the late singer George Michael on his Beats 1 show, Rocket Hour this week.

‘Not only was he a good friend, but he was probably one of the most brilliant songwriters this country’s ever produced, and certainly one of the best vocalists ever,’ John told his listeners.

‘One of the best in the world.’

Michael, who had been largely out of the public eye during the last few years of his life, died on Christmas Day.

He was just 53.

The 70-year-old John had teamed with him back in 1990 for a duet of his earlier  1970s hit Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me.

John opened this week’s radio show by playing Michael’s 1998 song Outside and later played Freedom 90 and One Last Try.

He said of the latter song: ‘I don’t get jealous of many songs, but I’m jealous of this song. I’d love to have written this.’
