Since unveiling new gender identity options last November, mobile dating app Tinder has matched some 250,000 transgender users, co-founder Sean Rad shared during a SXSW panel Friday.

The panel, “Swiping Right on Inclusivity with Tinder & GLAAD,” included Sarah Kate Ellis of GLAAD and Transparent producer Zackary Drucker and explored the ways in which Tinder has tried to more inclusive of transgender people.

“Tinder is about everyone, everyone’s welcome and everyone deserves to meet someone special,” Rad said.

In addition to offering 37 new gender identity options, Rad said Tinder has increased its community education and refined its approach to internal moderation to help prevent harassment.

“We have a great algorithm that can help, but no algorithm can solve humans,” Rad explained. “We were taken aback by how complex identity is. It’s a very complex area and, at the same time, Tinder is extremely simple.”

While Tinder began its inclusion work independently, it eventually connected with GLAAD to improve the product.

“We sent an important message, not only to our community but our internal employees as well,” he said. “When we were doing this it was very important we built a feature that works — and we are building a better product for transgender users, too.”
