Julia Roberts stands behind transgender teen fighting against Trump’s anti-trans laws

Actress Julia Roberts is standing behind transgender teenager Miguel Johnson to protest Donald Trump.

At last year’s Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network’s (GLSEN) Respect Awards, Roberts stood beside Johnson on stage.

The event raises money to keep schools safe for LGBTI youth, and Julia Roberts said Johnson is ‘incredibly brave.’

She said: ‘Miguel, like all the students I meet there, is smart, kind and incredibly brave to live their life openly and honestly at such a young age,’ reports PEOPLE.

‘As a parent, I want all students to feel safe and protected at school.

‘I stand with Miguel and trans students across the country.

‘You are loved,’ Roberts added.

Miguel Johnson identifies as gender fluid and lives in the conservative town of St. Joseph’s, Missouri.

Johnson believes Trump has been deceitful to the LGBTI community, to his own detriment.

They said: ‘Before Trump got elected, he always said he was totally for LGBTQ students.

‘And then after he got elected, he was basically like, “Just kidding, I lied.”‘

Trump’s anti-transgender agenda

On 22 February, President Trump officially rescinded protections for transgender students in public schools.

Transgender students face disproportionately high rates of bullying, harassment and discrimination at school.

The guidance helped provide non-discrimination protections for them in the US education system.
