Will a gay Dumbledore feature in Fantastic Beasts 2?

Warner Brothers has released new characters and confirmed the key actors for Fantastic Beasts 2. Filming of the sequel began at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden this week.

It’s previously been announced that Jude Law will be playing Dumbledore, while Johnny Depp will play Grindelwald.

The second Fantastic Beasts movie will also see the return of queer star Ezra Miller, who plays the role of Credence. A Warner Bros announcement teases he will be returning ‘in a mysterious way’.

Miller recently said watching Harry Potter helps him cope with homophobic bullying.

Warner Brothers confirmed that Callum Turner appears as Newt’s older brother and Zoë Kravitz returns as Leta Lestrange.

They used the announcement to tease new characters including a bounty hunter called Grimmson and a wizarding circus owner called Skender.

Will the Potter franchise finally announce a queer character?

Fans believe the movie is the long-awaited opportunity for JK Rowling to confirm the franchise’s first openly gay character. It is ten years since she first suggested the notion in Carnegie Hall in 2007.

At the question and answer appearance, she said: ‘I always thought Dumbledore was gay.’ Elaborating, she said that when Dumbledore was younger, he fell in love with the charming wizard, Gellert Grindelwald.

It’s this period in the Potter world that the Fantastic Beasts prequel explores.

If Rowling makes good on her revelation, then we may see Law and Depp spending some screen time exploring Dumbledore and Grindelwald’s relationship.
