Ousted Alabama justice runs for Senate with calls for judicial impeachment for gay-rights rulings

Former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore was twice ousted from the state supreme court, but that hasn’t stopped his determination to serve in public office.

Moore is currently the front-runner in a Republican primary bid for election to the Senate office held by Jeff Sessions before he became attorney general, the Washington Post reports. Moore’s primary opponent is Sessions’ replacement, Sen. Luther Strange.

During the campaign, Moore has advocated impeaching judges and possibly U.S. Supreme Court justices who have ruled for gay rights.

“The central argument of Moore’s campaign,” the Post reports, “is that removing the sovereignty of a Christian God from the functions of government is an act of apostasy, an affront to the biblical savior as well as the Constitution. Among the prices he says this country has paid for denying God’s supremacy: the high murder rate in Chicago, crime on the streets of Washington, child abuse, rape and sodomy.”

Moore was twice suspended from his judgeships for the remainders of his terms. The first was for refusing to obey court orders to remove a Ten Commandments monument from the courthouse. The second was for telling state probate judges they had a duty to deny marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
