Kim Davis announces she will be rerunning for her position next year

The Kentucky county clerk will be rerunning for her position next year.

Kim Davis was jailed in 2015 for five days for refusing to issue same-sex couples with marriage licenses.

Her attorney confirmed she will seek a second term in 2018.

Matt Staver is the founder of Florida-based law firm, Liberty Counsel. They have represented Davis in the past.

He told CBS News: ‘She loves her job and she loves the people.

‘I’m sure the election will probably have more attention because of who she is. But you know, she doesn’t have any major concerns about it.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2015 that same-sex couples can marry nationwide and established a new civil right.

Davis stopped issuing marriage licenses following this decision.

Taxpayers to pay $220,000 in legal fees

The four-time married born-again Christian refused to allow anyone in Rowan Country to issue licenses to same-sex couples.

A judge ordered her to issue the licenses after five couples sued her.

She refused and so was sent to jail for for contempt of court.

The state changed legislation after her release so county clerks do not have to sign their name on marriage licenses.

A federal judge announced in July the state taxpayers would pay more than $220,000 (€189,647) in legal fees for the couples that sued Davis.

The state has appealed. This might not be resolved before the 2018 election however.
