Gay men defend baker’s decision to refuse wedding cake for gay couple

Two gay men took to Facebook to defend a baker’s decision not to make a wedding cake for a gay couple.

T.J. and Matt posted a video to the Alliance Defending Freedom Facebook page to defend cake baker Jack Phillips.

In the video, T.J. says: ‘We’re gay and we’re here to support Jack Phillips.’

Matt adds: ‘We’re here to buy stuff from him and support him because we don’t think any artist should be forced to create for something that violates their beliefs.’

The video comes about in a series of material under the title Justice for Jake.

Alliance Defending Freedom is a nonprofit legal organization that litigates for religious liberty. It will represent Phillips in a Supreme Court hearing on 5 December.

Upcoming U.S. Supreme Court case

In July 2012, Charlie Craig and David Mullins visited Masterpiece Cakeshop in Denver to order a wedding cake. However, owner Jack Phillips refused on the basis of his religion.

The couple filed a complaint and won, but the bakery appealed the lawsuit. The appeal was defeated, so Phillips went higher and appealed to the Supreme Court, who agreed to hear it.

It is known as the Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission case.

If the Justices find for Craig and Mullins, it will be an important step forward in protections for the LGBTI community against discrimination.

If they find for Masterpiece on the basis of the First Amendment however, it could open the floodgates for legalized discrimination.

The case will be a landmark decision, with experts claiming it’s also the most crucial case since marriage equality.
