Cyndi Lauper wants to end LGBTQ youth homelessness. Here’s her plan…

Cyndi Lauper’s career got a boost in the LGBTQ community, and she has returned that affection many times over with some serious charity advocacy and action. In 2008 Lauper founded True Colors Fund, a non-profit organization designed to end homelessness among LGBTQ youth. A staggering 40% of all youth experiencing homelessness are LGBTQ. These young people face the struggles of homelessness, in addition to prejudice around their sexual orientation or gender identity – making them less likely to get help and more likely to remain homeless. This is the challenge Lauper’s True Colors Fund hopes to help solve.

Enter the True Fellows. Each year, the True Fellowship program offers LGBTQ young people who have experienced homelessness the opportunity to collaborate on and execute a six-month project with the True Colors Fund. During these six months, Fellows develop hands-on organizing experience, expand their professional development skills, and grow as advocates for their community.

Similarly, AT&T uses the reach of its Live Proud campaign to make millions aware of the problem and encourage them to #HelpLGBTyouth. AT&T is also supporting the True Colors Fund with $100,000 this year.

This December 9th, AT&T and the True Colors Fund present Cyndi Lauper and Friends: Home for the Holidays, a benefit concert featuring Jake Shears, Sandra Bernhard and Ani DiFranco among many other gay and pro-gay luminaries. The proceeds of the concert will go towards ending homelessness among LGBTQ youth.
