WATCH: Marvel’s new animated film stars Latina LGBTQ superhero Miss America

Marvel is bringing some of their most diverse heroes front and center with their newest movie project.

Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors is an upcoming full-length feature animated film starring a new generation of superheroes. It’s part of the company’s new multi-platform animation venture, which launches next year. It consists of digital shorts and this movie.

Sana Amanat, Marvel’s director of content, told BuzzFeed the project ‘came out of a desire to be able to tell stories about characters that we think are the next great heroes’.

‘I think it’s incredibly important that we tell young women and young girls that they have this incredible power within themselves, and that they have heroes out there [who] … they can look up to, especially in these times.’

Meet your new Marvel heroes

So who are these great heroes? Well, one is Latina and LGBTQ, another is Muslim, and yet another is a young black man trying to live up to Captain America.

  •  America Chavez aka Miss America first became well-known when she joined the Young Avengers. She’s Latina and canonically LGBTQ. Cierra Ramirez is voicing her in the movie.
  • Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel is the universe’s first-ever Muslim hero and instantly became a huge hit among fans. Kathreen Khavari is voicing her.
  • Doreen Green aka Squirrel Girl is the ever popular human mutate. Milana Vayntrub is voicing her — and playing her in next year’s live-action New Warriors.
  • Daisy Johnson aka Quake will also make an appearance. Chloe Bennett, who plays the character on the ABC series Agents of SHIELD, will voice her.
  • Gwen Stacy aka Spider-Gwen in an alternate universe shows up, likely to many fans’ excitement. Dove Cameron is voicing her.
  • Dante Pertuz aka Inferno is a Latino hero and also an Inhuman. He has pyrokinesis and will be voiced by Tyler Posey.
  • Patriot is a young black man who tries to live up to Captain America’s legacy. There have been three in Marvel’s history, so it’s unclear which one Kamil McFadden will be voicing.
  • Carol Danvers aka Captain Danvers is a longtime Avenger and very popular among fans. Kim Raver will voice her (as opposed to Brie Larson, who’s playing her in the live-action movies).

Finally, Ming-Na Wen will lend her voice to play the villainous Hala.
