Sally Ride is getting her own postage stamp next year

Legendary astronaut Sally Ride will be traveling once more next year. This time, however, it’s not on a rocket ship, it’s via the United States Postal Service (USPS).

The agency unveiled their slate of 2018 postage stamps earlier this week. Ride’s stamp joins others honoring STEM education, bioluminescent life, Mister Rogers, John Lennon, Lene Horne for their Black Heritage series, and more.

In her stamp, the astronaut appears in her blue NASA jumpsuit with the space shuttle behind her.

.@HRC is thrilled that Sally Ride will be on a @USPS stamp in 2018.

As a pioneering NASA astronaut, Ride was both the first American woman & the youngest American to be launched into space. Ride was with her partner, Tam O’Shaughnessy, for 27 years until Ride’s death in 2012. pic.twitter.com/jqNzK10IhT

‘As a young girl, Sally collected stamps,’ said Tam O’Shaughnessy, Ride’s partner until her death in 2012. ‘She would be so honored to now appear on a stamp!’

This is not the first the USPS has honored space exploration or NASA.

In 2016, they released stamps honoring New Horizons’ flyby of Pluto. Earlier this year, they created stamps commemorating the solar eclipse.

All of Sally Ride’s firsts

Ride first joined NASA in 1978. Five years later, in 1983, she became the first American woman to travel into space. She was the third overall woman in space, following two USSR astronauts.

To this day, she remains the youngest American ever to travel into space at the age of 32. She flew twice on the Orbiter Challenger before leaving NASA in 1987 and pursuing a career of teaching.

Previously, she was honored with a Google Doodle in 2015.

Earlier this year, LEGO immortalized her as a figurine.
