Teacher suspended for three years for saying homosexuality ‘breeds like cancer’

A teacher based in New Jersey has agreed to hand over her teaching certificates for three years after condemning homosexuality as a ‘sin’ that ‘breeds like cancer’ on her Facebook page.

Jenye ‘Viki’ Knox, 56, made the comments after the Union high school where she worked as a special educator put up a noticeboard display to commemorate LGBT History Month.

Asked her opinion of the board by friends on Facebook, she made her feelings clear, saying homosexuality is ‘a perverted spirit that has existed from the beginning of creation.’

Among other things, she said, ‘Why parade your unnatural immoral behaviors before the rest of us?’

New Civil Rights Movement took screen shots of the rant.

The school suspended her for three months without pay for ‘conduct unbecoming’ of a school teacher.

Federal lawsuit

She later resigned, citing the stress of being labelled a homophobe. She filed a federal lawsuit in 2013 alleging school officials had violated her right to free speech and religious rights.

That lawsuit was settled in September but is subject to a confidentiality agreement.

She also appealed the state Department of Education’s decision to revoke her three certificates to the Office of Administrative Law. However, in early December she proposed a three-year suspension, reports NJ.com.

The education department’s State Board of Examiners accepted the proposal. Its 8 December ruling has just come to light.

It notes that ‘Knox did not admit or concede the truth of the allegations’ relating to her suspension.

The certificates Knox held were: Teacher of Elementary School; Teacher of Nursery School; and Teacher of the Handicapped. Her teaching suspension began with immediate effect.
