1 in 8 trans people have been physically attacked while at work

One in eight trans people have been physically abused by a co-worker or customer while at work.

Stonewall released their Trans Report today.

They surveyed 871 trans and non-binary people around the UK with the help of YouGov.

The LGBT in Britain Trans Report is based on research with 871 trans and non-binary people.

The report highlights the levels of discrimination and hate crime faced by trans people across the country.

Stonewall reminds people with the report to join their Come Out for Trans Equality campaign. This encourages people to show their support for trans people and trans equality.

One in four trans people reported experiencing discrimination when househunting in the last year.

One in five non-binary people experienced similar discrimination.

The report features quotes from trans people about their experiences.

Willow is a 40-year-old trans person from Wales.

They said: ‘Even just five years ago it was not safe for me to come out as trans, the pace of change has been amazing.

‘Unfortunately, there now appears to be a backlash against that progress in the last year with hate from the media against trans increasing disturbingly in the last six months.

‘This increasing transphobia is accelerating and is causing acute anxiety in my daily life.’

A third of all trans people report being discriminated against because of their gender identity while visiting a café, restaurant, bar or nightclub.

The Trades Union Congress responds

The Trades Union Congress responded to the report which reveals high levels of discrimination against trans workers.

TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady said: ‘Everyone deserves to feel safe at work. But today’s report from Stonewall shows that too many trans workers still face bullying, harassment and even physical violence at work.

‘It’s time for all employers to bring in zero-tolerance policies on transphobic bullying and discrimination. And the government must change the law to protect workers from abuse by customers and clients as well as colleagues.’

More than a quarter of trans people in a relationship in the last year have faced domestic abuse.

41 percent of trans people said healthcare staff lacked understanding of trans health needs while they were accessing accessing general healthcare services in the last year.
