You know what they say… if you actually want to make a difference in our consumer-obsessed society, you better vote with your wallet! And the numbers show that’s exactly what a quarter of U.S. shoppers are doing.

The Guardian recently published a poll that found four in 10 Americans have shifted their spending over the last few months to align with their political views. Of those folks, 24% say they’ve ceased shopping at their favorite stores over politics, with self-described Democrats representing 31% of that total.

Overall, 50% of Democrats say they’re changing their spending habits, with 45% indicating they’ve based their decision around politics.

As the article mentions, it’s not unusual to see consumers whose preferred party isn’t in control of the government wield their personal power of the purse. Conservatives famously railed against Bud Light for partnering with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney, costing the iconic beer brand an estimated $395 million in the process. The movement was so effective, its fervor is credited with ushering in the eradication of companies’ DEI efforts.
