Author Daniel Curzon, known for many gay novels and plays, has won
the 1999 National New Play Contest for a non-gay play, a sequel to Samuel
Beckett's famous existentialist comedy, Waiting for Godot.
Selected out of seventy entries, by the judges of the Southwest
Theatre Association, Curzon's two-act script will receive a reading at the
combined 1999 Southwest Theatre Association/ U.S.I.T.T. The Southwest
conference will be held in Shreveport, Louisiana November 10-14, 1999.

Curzon's play is called Godot Arrives and carries the adventures
of the two hobo protagonists forward to the day that the mysterious Godot finally
arrives, bringing with him (or her--the part can be played by either sex) a Bag of Tricks in
which are all the spiritual, material, and mental answers that the human race has come up
with to try to solve life's problems.
There is also a sinister clown by the name of Bozo, who has his own answers for life's
riddles and his own secret plans for the two hobos. And it's not pretty.
The play is "a serious comedy" that presents the ideas at its core
as a wildly comic and absurdist romp.

"People will have a fun time," Curzon said, "but also get the sense that they
are experiencing something important or deep, not just a time waster. After all,
Beckett's original play was inspired by Laurel and Hardy, as he himself
acknowledged."
The playwright will receive an honorarium and an award plaque to be
given at the Awards Ceremony in November.
When contacted, Curzon said, "It's sure
better than a kick in the head. It's only taken twenty-five years of constant trying
to become this overnight discovery!"

Publication and multiple productions of "Godot Arrives" are real possibilities because
of this award. Already The Manhattan Theatre Club of New York, the
Riverside Theater in Florida, and a producer in London have requested the script.
