For the Reverend Sheldon, homosexuality proves a useful fund-raising tool, a modern replacement for the once rabid focus of the clergy in a previous era fulminating against the evils of "demon rum." Addressing Ambassador Hormel's prominence in current Senate confirmation debates, the Reverend Sheldon, who calls the openly gay Hormel "a man of low character" unwittingly reveals the hollowness of in his own character as demonstrated through the unkind, wounding words he spouts. A vicious rumor-monger alive with snide conjectures and awash in a sea of judgmental yahoo opinions, Sheldon flails any dissident whose views about homosexuality fail to agree with his own provincial ones. "The latest attacks against the nomination of John Ashcroft for U.S. Attorney General center around his opposition to the appointment of homosexual activist James Hormel as Ambassador to Luxembourg in 1999," he informs his philosophically-challenged audiences. "Hormel's homosexual activism was never given full exposure in the Senate nor in the media because of Clinton's success in undercutting Senate oversight," he insists.
Sheldon reaches astonishing lows as he scrapes up his damning judgments of others: "Why would a nation as great as ours want to send a man of such low character to represent us overseas? But of course, Bill Clinton could see no problem with Hormel. " "After all, a man who had engaged in oral sex with Monica in the Oval Office, could hardly be concerned about a man whose 'reading center' contained sex coloring books and materials promoting pedophilia… "Hormel's name has now surfaced again and he is being painted as a hero and a victim of a right wing vendetta. The Washington Post just published a guest editorial by Charles Kaiser, a columnist for the homosexual magazine The Advocate, attacking Ashcroft for his opposition to Hormel." Traditional Values practice, as the Reverend Sheldon presents it, welcomes an unembarrassed touting of the most vile slanders. Without blushing, he angrily charges: "The truth is that James Hormel is a long-time homosexual activist who has used his power and money to help recruit children in our nation's public schools." Supporting an immediate confirmation by the U.S. Senate of John Ashcroft, whose views just happen coincide with his own, Sheldon concludes: "To criticize Ashcroft for his opposition to Hormel is obscene and turns morality upside down. Ashcroft is to be cheered for opposing Hormel—a man who has lent his name to a reading center that promotes incest and child molestation in its materials. "The Senators who are critical of Ashcroft for his moral courage should be ashamed of their support for James Hormel. This homosexual activist deserves our condemnation, not our praise." Keen gay observers seem little surprised by the Reverend Sheldon's latest statement. "He's been lip flapping like that for eons," said one, "You know, he's kind of like a Fred Phelps-type, except shorter in stature, I think. That Reverend Fred's a big tall skinny number, kind of a scary looking creep, really. " |
