"Die Fag!" was printed with an ink marker on his body The attacker/ attackers are reportedly unknown. The student, from Spokane, has since withdrawn from the Roman Catholic institution.

Although the attack took place last month, school officials failed to inform either the police or their 1,400 student body until Friday, 23 days later. The Catholic officials, in an apparent attempt to excuse themselves for such tardiness, claimed that they'd expected the beaten student himself to notify local police.

Critics of Roman Catholic anti-gay dogmas suggested that the officials' silence, given the fact that other students might have been at risk, was inexcusable. They likened it to a comparable silence on the part of the Church when its pedophile priests and cardinals molest children, or when reports surface that four times as many priests are infected with the AIDS virus as are infected in the male population at large.

Carroll College has added an additional three security guards since it discovered the bashing. The 60-bed dormitory, Borromeo Hall, where the attack took place had previously been left unguarded.

Activists gathered at a news conference Saturday to hear Senate Minority Leader Steve Doherty, a Democrat, call for a revival of a hate crime bill that would include sexual orientation.

"I thought it was a moral imperative for years," said Senator Doherty, "but its now a matter of safety."
