Reacts to Claims of a 'Long & Continuous Relationship' Kyle Bradford's Story called 'Vicious & Self-Promoting' |

Later a translation of Acustar's report appeared in TV y Novellas a Spanish language magazine, popular in both Mexico and Miami. Cruise's lawyers insist "there's not a germ of truth in this vicious and self-promoting story." Bradford, whose films feature "wrestling porn" and whose real name is Chad Slater, is said to claim he's had a "long and continuous relationship" with Cruise and that when Cruise's wife suddenly discovered her husband to be having an affair with a man, she initiated their divorce. Cruise's legal papers deny this account, in language oddly reminiscent of the era of Senator Joseph McCathy's 1950s purges against communists:
"Bradford's defamatory statements are of a kind calculated to cause Cruise harm in his profession and ability to earn. Because Cruise is a motion picture actor, he is dependent upon worldwide public acceptance of his films. Losing the respect and enthusiasm of a substantial segment of the movie going public would cost Cruise very substantial sums. "While he believes in the right of others to follow their own sexual preference, vast numbers of the public throughout the world do not share that view and, believing that he had a homosexual affair and did so during his marriage, they will be less inclined to patronize Cruise's films, particularly since he tends to play parts calling for heterosexual romance and action adventure. Cruise has suffered and will suffer personal and professional harm." Tom Cruise has previously gone to court to contest tabloid-style rumors. A European magazine calling Cruise impotent found itself successfully sued by him while another that had portrayed his marriage to Nicole Kidman as a gay man's cover-up device was also forced to pay damages.
