New York, New York--A protest will take place Thursday (tomorrow) against MTV for promoting homophobic artist Eminem. MTV has scheduled this maker of murderous-lyrics to perform at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Eminem's CD, The Marshall Mathers LP, according to GLAAD's executive director Joan Garry, "contains the most blatantly offensive, homophobic lyrics GLAAD has ever seen."

Gay activists want Eminem to please stand up and admit his homophobia

Ms. Garry continued:

"With its constant promotion of Eminem, which includes an invitation to perform at the highly-visible Video Music Awards, MTV is ignoring its responsibility to consider the impact his lyrics have on the public, specifically its own target audience of easily influenced youth."

WHEN: Thursday, September 7, 2000 at 6:00 PM. Just prior to MTV's Video Music Awards ceremony.

WHERE: On the northeast corner of Radio City Music Hall in New York City, 6th Avenue and (south of) 52nd.

Released last May by Interscope Records, The Marshall Mathers LP features lyrics such as the following:

"You faggots keep egging me on
'Til I have you at knifepoint, then you beg me to stop"

GLAAD's Executive Director released a statement that said:

"The hatred and hostility conveyed on this CD has a real effect on real people's lives as it encourages violence against gay men and lesbians. While hate crimes against gay people are on the rise, these epithets create even more bias and intolerance toward an entire community. MTV is helping to create an environment of intolerance as Eminem is given countless opportunities to spread his message of hate."

It is for this reason that GLAAD is encouraging others to join our efforts at the MTV Video Music Awards to help send a clear message to MTV that blatant disregard for the well-being and safety of an entire community is dangerous and inexcusable.
