Company Sued San Francisco Because of Domestic Partnerships |
Compiled by Badpuppy's GayToday From United With Pride Reports San Francisco, September 28-- After three months, United Airlines management has failed to respond to a proposal from employees regarding domestic partner benefits despite a promise to do so. United With Pride, the Network of Lesbian, Gay, Bi and Transgendered Employees of United Airlines and their Supporters sent the proposal to United's upper management June 23. The 29- page proposal outlined ways United currently discriminates against its lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and unmarried employees by offering additional benefits to those employees who are legally married, benefits which constitute more than 40% of each employee's total compensation. The group has repeatedly offered to work with United's management to correct this inequality. The proposal outlined detailed data gathered from companies that have implemented domestic partner benefits successfully. To date, the company's response has been silence. In light of United's new efforts to reach out to the lesbian and gay markets by sponsoring events and organizations, the silence seems particularly contradictory to United With Pride's Executive Director, Nick W. Morse. "How can United court gay and lesbian dollars while denying equal access to benefits to it's gay and lesbian employees?" Morse asked. "While we support the company's efforts to reach out to the community, it appears to be without principle. "In light of United's recent lawsuit against the City of San Francisco, we find it most disturbing that management refuses to even communicate with us -- its employee-owners." United Airlines is the largest employee-owned company in the United States and is the first domestic airline to file a formal lawsuit against San Francisco's Domestic Partner Benefits Ordinance. The group hopes that continued support and input from employees and customers will prompt management to act soon to provide equal benefits to all of its 94,000 employees. United With Pride represents over 10,000 lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered employees of United Airlines, it subsidiaries and partners, and their supporters. United With Pride, Inc.
