Presidential candidate Bill Bradley
Los Angeles, California--Bill Bradley, following a successful day of campaigning for the Democratic Presidential nomination in California, appeared on Larry King Live Tuesday night and his very first telephone question came from a caller who claimed to be ex-military and who objected to Bradley's stand on gays in the military, asking him to reconsider his position. Bradley refused to reconsider.

King asked him directly to describe his stand. Bradley replied:

"Gays have always been in the military. They've just had to hide. We've, since 1993, had a policy that doesn't work. It's called 'don't ask, don't tell.'

"And what I can't understand is how is it possible that gays can serve openly and with distinction in the Department of Justice, in the State Department, in the Treasury Department, in the federal courts, in the Congress, in the White House and not in the military.

"Why can gays be policemen, brick layers, football players, lawyers, nuclear scientists, but can't be staff sergeants or lieutenants?

"I believe that we have to reach out to everybody. I think that, you know, you do it, as I said. The method and timing of this would be my own. Of course, I would be in consultation with many different people in this process."
