Hipster Homophobia
Cheers for John Demetry's no-nonsense review of hipster homophobia and of the film The Deep End.
Scott Tucker And a Little Child Will Lead The groundswell is rising. Read the statements by two courageous young patriots, ages 10 and 12, that was presented to the Orange County, California, Democratic Central Committee. After their presentation the Central Committee adopted the resolution UNANIMOUSLY. This comes on the heels of the Congressman Filner/ Vince Bugliosi presentation at Mira Loma Junior College in Oceanside, California last Saturday night, attended by over 350 people ( plus people were standing at the back of the hall and outside listening). When The Congressman and Vince called for impeachment there was a standing ovation. The Oregon Democratic Party has officially adopted a resolution calling for Congress to begin an investigation into bringing impeachment proceedings. I would urge people to paste and copy what Natasha and Alexandar presented. Pass it around, send to school with your children. If you are teachers, you can use it as a focus of discussion. Contact your local Central Committees, read the statements and the resolution at your club or association meeting. It is our responsibility to leave this country to our children in a better condition than we found it in. I commend the parents of Alexandar and Natasha for showing them they too have a voice, and it is their future which is at stake. Jody Holder
Alexandar's statement: My name is Alexandar H... and I am 12 years old. I will be eligible to vote in six years. But what difference will voting make if votes are not counted. Last year set a precedent for future elections. It showed that the President can be selected any time a partisan Supreme Court chooses to stop the vote count when their guy is ahead. If we do not act to stop this abuse of power now, then when? If we do not support the right of the people to vote now, then when? When we finally support the right to voters to have their votes counted, will it be too late? I ask that on behalf of all Americans who want their vote to one day count that we immediately make as part of our platform a resolution to investigate, as well as a resolution to impeach and convict the five U.S. Supreme Court Justices, William H. Rehnquist, Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas, Anthony M. Kennedy and Sandra Day O'Conner, who abused their authority under the Constitution and violated the separation of powers of the Federal Government, interfered with the rights and authority of the state courts in direct opposition to their own and established precedents of previous US Supreme Court decisions, and failed to honor the Canons of Judicial Ethics by failing to recuse themselves in clear and obvious cases of personal bias, in effect committing treason against the United States of America when they stopped democracy and robbed 100 million Americans of their right to elect a President and installed their own personal partisan preference in the White House in the Bush v. Gore decision on December 12, 2000. The evidence is incontrovertible and, by failing to act now, we acquiesce in the crime that has been committed against the American people. I ask that your generation not destroy the dreams of my generation by sitting back and doing nothing. Natasha's statement: My name is Natasha H... I am 10 years old. I too want my vote to mean something someday. When I grow up, I am going to be an attorney. I want to one day help protect the Constitutional rights of all Americans. Yet the very future of the Constitution is in jeopardy. "We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish Justice"? Justice was so important that it was placed up front in the preamble. Yet when justices whose wives and sons work for a party to a case and whose future plans depend on the outcome of that case, choose to violate all established precedents in ruling for the party they are personally vested in seeing win rather than recusing themselves, they make a mockery of both justice and of the Constitution. And to do this they had to grant standing to a party who had none in violation of established law and precedent.
How can we support democracy anywhere, if we don't first support it here and now? A historical question: Who was worse Hitler or the Germans who allowed him to take over their country and institute his Reforms? If we don't act now, people may one day ask that question about us. Resolution: Investigate Supreme Court Justices WHEREAS: the right to vote is one of the most fundamental rights of United States citizens thereby allowing United States Citizens to express their wishes in how they want to be represented; and WHEREAS: United States Citizens voted in good faith only to realize that their ballots were mismarked and/or tolled out in the State of Florida thereby nullifying their right to be heard; and WHEREAS: legal recounts of the ballots were ultimately denied by the US Supreme Court majority who also had friends and family lobbying on behalf of George W. Bush, creating a conflict of interest
Submitted by Susan Freeze Adopted by the Executive Board of the Orange County Democratic Party at its meeting on August 15, 2001 Adopted unanimously by the Central Committee of the Orange County Democratic Party at its meeting on August 27, 2001 Katherine Harris Lauded for Brazen Stupidity Can you think of many things dumber than sitting in a barrel and riding over Niagara Falls? Neither can The Center for the Study of Popular Culture (CSPC) which annually awards some particularly stupid conservative activity with the Annie Taylor Award.
The award was presented at the Sixth Annual Restoration Weekend which is sponsored by the CSPC and was held this year at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, CO. One wonders if Rich Tafel (head of Log Cabin Republicans, a group of homosexual conservatives who want to belong to the Republican party) and his consort (?) attended this gathering of conservative glitterati. But that's an aside. The brains behind this activity belong to one David Horowitz whose self-promotional Web-based packaging declares that he is the equivalent of a "born again" conservative, having spent most of his adult life as a "left-wing radical." Mr. Horowitz is probably getting very rich now that he has discovered the mother lode of wealth to be milked from the right wing nuts by pandering to their bigotry. And pander, he does. The CSPC website contains such goodies as The Wednesday Morning Club, dedicated to "diversity of thought and expression within the entertainment community," Second Thoughts Online, a publishing arm so you can order copies of the bigotry in print, and Frontpage Magazine whose lead article is about 36 straight, white male-identified victims of the hatred of minorities. Katherine Harris is in perfect company and received a perfect award. Her actions were about as smart as riding a barrel over Niagara Falls - and just about as worthwhile. But she lived and earned the Annie Taylor award from rich people who think dumb acts should be praised. One has to wonder how hard Mr. Horowitz has to bite the tongue that seems so firmly implanted in his cheek as he takes money from these people. If they weren't so dangerous, it might actually be funny. Donald Cavanaugh Larry Kramer's HIV-Drug Regimen
Let me make an analogy: a man drinks a pint of whisky every day for 20 years, develops cirrhosis of the liver, then wants a liver transplant, but intends to keep on drinking. Would that make sense, ethically or otherwise? Is it reasonable to expect that Kramer's liver transplant would be successful, if he continues to take drugs that damage the liver?
