About Those TV Reporters

Reader says the mainstream media indeed have failed in their duty by not talking about the openly-gay relationships of Father Mychal Judge (above) and Mark Bingham Paul Barwick's "How TV Reporters Have Failed Us" was a superb contribution to your publication. I've drawn it to the attention not only of a number of personal friends and local human rights activists, but I copied it to GLAAD, demanding to know why GLAAD hadn't written the piece and placed it in a very prominent and respected publication [ie, TIME, USA TODAY]. (By the way, if you look carefully at communiqués from GLAAD over the past couple of days, you may sense, as I do, they're scrambling to respond to the challenge.)

Can you pass along my appreciation to the author? Any chance of hearing more from him?

Meanwhile, thanks for your efforts on GayToday each week, and for your long efforts for the Cause throughout the many years. (Of course, anyone who recognizes as well as you how this all got started with Leaves of Grass can't be half bad!)

Ciao / love,
Mitch Gould

Oppose this Constitutional Amendment

There is a Constitutional Amendment being proposed that will ultimately ban homosexual marriages/civil unions and possibly domestic partner benefits in the future. It is being pushed through Congress quickly so as to make as little noise as possible...there's so much else in the news right now... Short and to the point: If you agree that gays and lesbians are NOT second class citizens and SHOULD be allowed the same rights as all men and women, including civil unions, then please go to this site and sign the petition in order to make your opinion known: http://www.petitiononline.com/0712t001/petition.html).

This petition is being organized (it's not an "add your name to the bottom and forward" kind of thing). Go to the site itself in order to sign the petition. And please pass this along to your friends and family (gay & straight allies) so that we can all, together, convey the message that the Constitution is about human rights.

November 2-4: Youthful Activists to Gather in Florida

Hundreds of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning(LGBTQ) youth and adult allies will gather in Florida during the weekend of November 2-4 for the NYAC Southern Regional Conference event. The event will be held at the Tradewinds Hotel and Conference Center in St. Petersburg Beach, FL.

The annual conference, sponsored by the National Youth Advocacy Coalition and hosted by the statewide human rights organization Equality Florida, provides space for southern youth to explore critical issues including racism, homophobia, sexuality, youth empowerment, body image, transgender expression and more.

This year the conference will also specifically address the hostile climate and suspension of civil liberties which is developing as a result of the recent terrorist attacks on America.

Within a casual setting on St. Petersburg Beach, youth activists and adult allies will have the opportunity to help heal the anxiety and sadness which has enveloped the country in the wake of the September 11th through powerful and positive workshops and unity with friends.

Kay Whitlock, Special Representative for LGBT Programs for the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), a Quaker peace and social justice organization and author of In the Time of Broken Bones: A Call to Dialogue on Hate Violence and the Limitations of Hate Crimes Legislation will be the conference's keynote speaker.

"After much deliberation, the conference committee decided to move forward with the 2001 event," said Koren Hoard, conference organizer for NYAC. "Despite concerns about LGBTQ youth traveling in today's hostile climate, we felt this was exactly the kind of gathering which is needed in such an angry time. There has never been a better, and more important time to unite in healing, sharing and growth."

The conference is $100 for NYAC youth (22 and under) and $115 for youth who are not NYAC members. Fees are slightly higher for adults. Scholarships applications for registration fees are available through NYAC.

For more information and to receive registration packets, contact Koren Hoard of NYAC at 202-319-7596 ext. 13 or via e-mail at Koren@nyacyouth.org.
