Congressional disconnect has never been more apparent as demonstrated by the killing of this hate crime legislation. The Republicans have now given license to the bigots and the haters to kill, maim, and damage the minority and marginalized in this nation. Even while the country is witnessing an unprecedented outpouring of grief over the anniversary of the brutal murder of Matthew Shepard and as the trial for his killer is underway, the conservatives in Congress have said to Matthew's family, to the lesbian and gay community and to the nation, "It's no big deal. We don't care how many die, how many are brutalized." This action by the Republican Senate is anti-gay. Antipathy for lesbians and gay men is the only possible motivation behind this action. Wanton disregard for the lives ruined by bias violence can be the only explanation for the callous lack of compassion shown by conservative zealots in Congress. They would clearly rather serve a narrow and prejudiced agenda of fundamentalist extremism, than serve the American people. The American people were hoping for leadership; instead they got bashed by the Republicans. The National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs |
