Porn Stars and their Self-Esteem

porn.jpg - 11.92 K There are others who are consumed by the need to validate themselves in front of the camera…Inevitably they have convoluted views of their own sexuality that are tied to issues of self-esteem (or lack thereof). And more often than not they claim to be straight or gay-for-pay. Not surprisingly, they are a challenge to work with and tend to be disdainful and disparaging of those of us who are comfortable acknowledging our gay sexuality.

The Crotch Attack: TV Wrestling's Contribution to Civilization

wrestling1.jpg.jpg - 15.92 K The crotches of the WWF have come under fire from USA Today which estimated that 1,658 times the groins of wrestlers were either grabbed or pointed at in 50 episodes

USA Today is so worried about your children that it printed a handy table enumerating the 1,658 instances of "grabbing/pointing to one's crotch" in 50 W.W.F. episodes. Wondering whether children will emulate this behavior seems a little disingenuous at this late date. Of course they will, just as they did with the Power Rangers and the Teen Age Ninja Turtles and Davy Crockett. Expect several stories in the next year from the playgrounds of America delineating the rash of injuries that will result from pee-wee atomic drops and flyweight suplexes inexpertly applied.

His Eye is on the Heterosexual Sparrow

The Bible contains six admonishments to homosexuals and 362 to heterosexuals. This doesn't mean God doesn't love heterosexuals. It's just that they need more supervision.

In her annual address to her subjects—presumably vetted endlessly by the Buckingham Palace staff—Queen Elizabeth II observed that the young can sometimes be wiser than us." Than us? I wondered: is this proper English? So I dug out The Oxford Guide to English Usage and found that Her Majesty was wrong.

Matthew in Luminous Joy

mshepard2.gif - 23.41 K Remembering Matthew Shepard: A Vigil in Dance, presented by the MorganScott Ballet on Tuesday night at the Danspace Project at St. Mark's Church, paid homage to Mr. Shepard, the Wyoming college student murdered in October, with rousing music and luminous, joyous dance. Fashion Advice for Female Oscar Attendees

If you have something on top, show it off at the Oscars…particularly if they're yours.

Liz Smith—quoted in "Style Diary" by William Norwich, The New York Observer, March 22

The Fashionization of the Oscars

Both Ms. Smith and Mr. Ferrara felt that the 'fashionization' of the Oscars has its downside. "When it becomes not only about the work but about 'What's your dress?' Mr. Ferrara imitated Joan Rivers barking Oscar-night coverage on E! Entertainment Television, 'and it's all borrowed dresses and jewelry, well, what's the point?'

Queer Families are Becoming the Norm

What's at stake is less the conversion of homo into hetero, and more the conversion of queer families into traditional ones. As critic Kath Weston has explained, the queer family is a 'family we choose.' A group of close-knit friends who support and nurture each other in ways that biological families often spectacularly fail to do. Driven from their own families by prejudice, homosexuals have historically formed queer families to regain a sense of home and community that they miss. But in the post-Reagan era of job mobility and 'rootlessness,' the queer family has become a kind of norm for straights and gays alike.
