By the end of 1999, doctors had been able to confirm only 17,316 cases of people infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in China, Xinhua news agency reported. Full-blown cases of AIDS, or Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, were confirmed at 647, and 356 people have been confirmed to have died of the disease in China, Xinhua said. Reuters |
