The Return of Jerry Falwell When the Anheuser-Busch Company launched a Bud Light ad campaign last month featuring two men holding hands, it probably didn't realize that it was threatening "the Judeo-Christian standards on which this nation is based." But that's how the Rev. Jerry Falwell sees it. Rawley Grau—Press Pass Q, May 7 Starr Sweats the Small Stuff Ken Starr goes after a small fish with his big net. Dan Rather--on the trial of Julie Hiatt Steele—CBS Evening News, May 6 Is a Cop Flashing More Than His Badge? THE CJC is investigating a police officer who was allegedly seen masturbating while driving his car through traffic on Brisbane's northside. A female passenger on a bus allegedly saw the off-duty officer masturbating about a month ago and passed on a registration number to police…. Police sources said the officer had been departmentally charged last year after one of his neighbors complained they had seen him masturbating in front of a window. The charges were later dropped. Paula Doneman--- "CJC checks masturbating claim"-- The Courier Mail, Brisbane, Australia, May 8 10 Million Lesbian Moms There are around 10 million lesbian mothers out there and around 60 to 70 percent of all lesbian couples will have children. What we're witnessing is an incredible evolution of women's consciousness. Barbara Seyda—"Celebrating the Other Moms" by Jane Ganahl, San Francisco Examiner, May 6 Empathy?
Dan Savage—"Fear the Geek"—The Stranger, May 6-12, Seattle, Washington Tickled Pink by Black Holes Black holes, those fearsome remnants of collapsed stars which busily tear other stars to shreds while sucking billions of tons of matter into a point smaller than a pin head, are not black at all, but pink. Australian scientists who first made the controversial observation have just disproved other theories which attempt to explain the phenomenon. "The bottom line is that some black holes are actually pink," said Paul Francis, an astronomer from Mt Stromlo Observatory and physics lecturer at the Australian National University. "We know this but we haven't the foggiest idea why." Black holes have such intense gravity fields not even light can escape them. Stephen Brook—"Tickled Pink by Black Holes"-- The Australian, May 7 Brooklyn's Rough Sex Police They said he was happy, healthy and joking with his friends at Club Rendezvous in Flatbush before cops allegedly beat him and sodomized him with a wooden stick on the bathroom floor of the 70th Precinct station house. The testimony from Louima's friends contradicted insinuations by defense lawyer Marvyn Kornberg that Louima's internal injuries – a torn bladder and colon – stemmed from a consensual gay sex act. Devlin Barrett— "Louima Gay, No Way Say Pals Who Tell of Dance Night"—New York Post, May 6 A Bathhouse Debate in the San Francisco Chronicle Your hysterical May 6 rant against gay bathhouses, which operate just fine in Berkeley and San Jose, to name two cities that approach AIDS education rationally, made the following unsubstantiated claim. "At a time when there is disturbing evidence of an upsurge in dangerous sex practices among some gays, loosening bathhouse rules would be the wrong message to send by a city that has seen so much suffering and death because of AIDS." Where is the scientific evidence to back up this assertion of an upsurge? The latest monthly male rectal gonorrhea rates in San Francisco show the following data. For March 1999 there were 13 (thirteen) cases. For March 1998 there were 19 (nineteen) cases. Year to date, as of March 1999: 37 (thrity-seven) cases Year to date, as of March 1998: 44 (forty-four) cases Source: SF Monthly STD Report, which is vailable from Bob Kohn of the SF health department. His number is 415-554-8477. Also, recent AIDS SF AIDS quarterly surveillance reports shows the following. For AIDS cases by transmission category, Table 5 over the last four years, gives this data. As we revive the debate about gay bathhouses in San Francisco I plead with you to provide readers with more statistics about declining AIDS rates and decreasing sexually transmitted diseases amongst gay men. After all, if your argument is sound you can back it up with science, not fear.
