The Army wants a Few Straight Men

If the Salvation Army has this kind of money to spend on supporting its prejudices, it obviously doesn't need my paltry donations. From now on, I'll just walk right past the bell ringers at Christmas.

Suzanne B. Conaway-"Letters"--Kansas City Star, July 19

Consumer Fulfillment & Our Cultural Reality

We too live on the basis of the definitions and ideas about reality our culture gives us. And we do so without much reflection about them. Who has the time and the financial resources to stop everything else and sit and question this dominant view of reality we inherited? Who has the energy to ask larger questions after a long day at the office, the store, or the factory, followed by the demands of our families and our need to maintain a lifestyle that we too have been taught is "fulfilling".

Robert N. Minor, Ph.D.-Scared Straight: Why It's So Hard to Accept Gay People and Why It's So Hard to be Human, published 2001 by HumanityWorks! www.fairnessproject.org

Its About How You See Yourself

Being gay is in some ways more about how you relate to the world and how it relates to you…Your sexual orientation is a major defining factor in how the world sees you. It determines who will like you and treat you well, and who will abuse and revile you. It is about how you see yourself.

A Kid in the Hall Plays Flexible

I have a nude woman in the show, and that really freaks people out. They had the vice squad watch my show in Florida, and in Denver the cops came…Her purpose is to help Buddy explore his bisexual quotient. It ends with Buddy deciding he's seen and done it all. There's only one frontier left -- and he's not going to space. I bring a nude woman on, and Buddy explores her.

Ruthless Profiteers

The history of the American kings of capital and authority is the history of repeated crimes, injustice, oppression, outrage, and abuse, all aiming at the suppression of individual liberties and the exploitation of the people. A vast country, rich enough to supply all her children with all possible comforts, and insure well-being to all, is in the hands of a few, while the nameless millions are at the mercy of ruthless wealth gatherers, unscrupulous lawmakers, and corrupt politicians. Sturdy sons of America are forced to tramp the country in a fruitless search for bread, and many of her daughters are driven into the street, while thousands of tender children are daily sacrificed on the altar of Mammon. The reign of these kings is holding mankind in slavery, perpetuating poverty and disease, maintaining crime and corruption; it is fettering the spirit of liberty, throttling the voice of justice, and degrading and oppressing humanity. It is engaged in continual war and slaughter, devastating the country and destroying the best and finest qualities of man; it nurtures superstition and ignorance, sows prejudice and strife, and turns the human family into a camp of Ishmaelites.

Dead Smokers Don't Need Social Security

Would a responsible, reformed tobacco company tell foreign governments that dead smokers are a good thing for their budgets? Philip Morris is doing exactly that. The same Philip Morris that has spent millions of dollars on a public relations campaign to convince the American public that it is now a responsible company is also telling the government of the Czech Republic that smoking is good for the government's finances, because of savings from early deaths caused by smoking, according to a November 28, 2000, report produced for Philip Morris and exposed today in the Wall Street Journal. A Czech public health leader, Eva Kralikova pointed out the absurdity of their report when she said "following that logic [of the report], the best recommendation to government would be to kill all people on the day of their retirement."

Fifty Fifty

For each of the 50 wounds he inflicted in stabbing a Marinette man to death, Paul Foss, 28, will serve a year in prison. Foss will be 78 before he's eligible for parole in 2051, a Brown County judge ruled Wednesday. The prison sentence closed the case on the 1997 Green Bay murder of AIDS activist and youth outreach worker Jeff Wahlen, 45.

A Word to Anti-Gay Religious Crusaders

My only hope for you is that in your lifetime you learn how to put your energies into fighting something useful -- homelessness, child labor, violence in schools, abuse against women or children or the elderly, gun control, famine, AIDS, cancer, leukemia -- ANYTHING that would benefit society.
