We train our girls to be virgins, but we want our young men to be studs. And I wonder whom we think our studs are having sex with?

Reagan's Children Defend Dad's Biographer

Last weekend both Patti and her brother, Ron, went public with their defenses of Edmund Morris' controversial biography of their father. Patti, writing in The Washington Post said it was a relief to read that Mr. Reagan had not shut her out of his inner life, but also the entire universe. Ron told "60 Minutes" that his father treated "everybody the same way," whether you happened to be his gardener or his child.

Candidate Bush Won't 'Knowingly' Hire Homosexuals?

gwbush.jpg - 7.62 K Despite Bush's clearly anti-gay agenda, certain gay Republicans continue to jump on the Bush Bandwagon. It boggles the mind how some people abandon common sense when politics is involved. Why would any gay person want to support someone who doesn't believe in fairness and equality for all Americans?

The Devil's Dictionary Defines Marriage

I ended up re-reading all of Ambrose Bierce's Devil's Dictionary last week. He's such a grumpy old bastard, I couldn't resist it. Among the many definitions that caught my eye was the following one for bride, namely, "Bride, n. A woman with fine prospect of happiness behind her". The very next definition in the book is "Brute, n. See HUSBAND". I began to suspect that Mr Bierce didn't exactly have a high opinion of the state of matrimony. Just to confirm it, here is his definition of marriage: " ... The state or condition of a community consisting of a master, a mistress and two slaves, making in all, two".

Coming Out is a Way of Life

stowe1.jpg - 19.80 K Coming out means choosing to live on your own terms. It is a resounding vote of confidence in your own worth. Taken to its fullest extent, coming out goes far beyond just saying, "I love men." It says, "I trust myself enough to listen to my own voice above that of society, the church, the media, my family, or anyone else. I value myself enough to reach for my full potential, to claim all the love, fulfillment and satisfaction that I deserve." Coming out, ultimately, means living out.

Sad about Another Dear Old Dad

My father's idea of family values is very different from mine. He insists his are right and mine are wrong. I'm deeply sorry that my father feels that he can no longer be a part of my life

A Sprawling Infrastructure

In less than half a century, gays have created a sprawling infrastructure of business, civic, religious, political, cultural, and athletic organizations that enrich and enliven the nation beyond measure.

Congress Gets a Call from Clinton

shepquest3.jpg - 19.47 K It has been a year since the murder of Matthew Shepard, and two years since I first proposed to strengthen the nation's hate crime laws. During this time, hundreds of Americans have been injured or killed, simply because of who they are. In response to this epidemic of violence, people around the country have joined me in calling on Congress to pass this important legislation.

Earlier this year, the Senate passed my legislation, which, if enacted, would strengthen current law by making it easier to prosecute crimes based on race, color, religion and national origin and by expanding coverage to include crimes based on sexual orientation, gender and disability.

Congress has the opportunity to complete work on that legislation and to send it to me for signature. I call on Congress to do the right thing and enact hate crime legislation before the end of this session. The nation cannot afford to wait.

Special Quality Rappers

newyorker1099.jpg - 8.60 K One's chances for commercial success as a rapper are determined, in large part, by the persona or character one projects, and how vividly it stands out from the personae of the other hot rappers of the moment. "When you think about Eve," (Kevin) Liles explained to me, "if Eve's man was in a gunfight and he got shot, she would pick up his gun and start shooting at the other guy. Li'l Kim would fuck that other man. Rih Digga would stab that other man. Luck would have a great time with that man, then hit him in the head with a bat. So all of them have their own special qualities."

wwhitman4.jpg - 8.68 K An Early Review of Walt Whitman's 'Leaves of Grass'

Mr. Whitman sees nothing vulgar in that which is commonly regarded as the grossest obscenity: rejects the laws of conventionality so completely as to become repulsive: gloats over coarse images with the gusto of a Rabelais.

The New York Times, 1860, quoted in Walt Whitman Selected Poems 1855-1892—A New Edition edited by Gary Schmidgall—(St. Martin's Press, 1999)
