George W. Bush for Church Van Driver

falwell3.jpg - 5.05 K We Baptists call this a great testimony.... A DUI 24 years ago... Met and married a sweet Christian girl the next year... Billy Graham led him to Christ shortly thereafter... At age 40, became a teetotaler and hasn't had a drink in 14 years... Served two terms as Governor of our second largest state... Reads his Bible and prays with his family... Bottom line: A perfect candidate for deacon or Sunday School teacher... or driver of the church van.

Rev. Jerry Falwell—Memoradum, November 3

Vatican Secrets

Concern within the Roman Catholic Church about the number of priests who have died of AIDS-related illnesses is growing, as is evidence that the death rate exceeds earlier estimates.

Judy L. Thomas—“ Concern grows over AIDS rate among priests”—Kansas City Star, November 5

Robert De Niro Sings for You

I would like to draw your attention to the release of the film Flawless by Joel Schumacher starring Robert De Niro & Philip Seymour Hoffman which opens in the UK on 24th November.

It's a upbeat dramatic comedy of the relationship which develops between an ex-cop stroke victim (De Niro) and a drag queen (Hoffman) who he goes to for singing lessons as part of his rehabilitation.

Anti-Gay Newspaper Ads by God

The last time I checked, the Almighty wasn't taking out newspaper display ads. You'd never know that, though, from a recent 2-by-4-inch ad in The Oregonian. "TO PLEASE GOD," it reads, "VOTE YES ON Measure 9."

Karen McCowan—" God calls us to say no to 9" Eugene Register-Guard, October 30

Hey, Romeo! Juliet is a 14-Year Old Boy!

If Romeo and Juliet were trying to wed in modern-day Nebraska, rather than in the Italy of Shakespeare's imagination, they could not obtain a license. She was only 14, and the minimum age for marriage in Nebraska is 17. However, literature's most romantic pair defied a custom of their own time and culture: Marriage was not a pact between passionate lovers, but between families, and the Capulets and Montagues would never agree to such a match…Though actors who played Juliet in Shakespeare's day would have been male, the story was about a match between a male and a female, as marriage traditionally has been in nearly all circumstances.

Stephen Buttry—" At Heart of Marriage Debate Are Ever-Changing Traditions" Omaha World-Herald, November 5

Honest Gay Priest Became a Bouncer

For the last year in Los Angeles, Garrick has been supporting himself with odd jobs. For several months he worked as a security guard for the Tonight Show. "I threw out a couple of drunks one night," he said. He was living in a motel until he found an apartment in Sylmar. Family and friends have helped support him and finance his play with gifts and loans.

'Queers for Nader' List-- November 5

He's Got No Friends in Pennsylvania

A jazz singer billed as a guest artist in Washington Community Theater's latest production has been asked not to return to the stage after performing a pro-gay song and distributing gay literature…Patrick Arena sang his original song, "Little Gay Baby," and supplied literature for a local chapter of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbian and Gays at WCT's Wednesday and Thursday night performances of "Toast of the Town."… Arena, 49, recently moved back to his native Washington from New York City…Community theater members objected to Arena's using the stage to make political statements. Its president, Lorry McMahon, said Arena was asked not to return Friday after he repeated his performance Thursday.

We've Got Some Friends in Pennsylvania

Students, teachers, guidance counselors and clergy spoke out overwhelmingly in favor of the existence of the Gay/Straight Alliance, a Haverford High School club that seeks an environment of tolerance among gay and straight students, at last night's meeting of the township school board. More than 100 township residents, many of them students, attended the meeting. Twenty-one people defended the group while three criticized it… The club's existence was questioned following the Oct. 11 arrest of a student, Ryan Schlembach, 18, over the posting of a sign in the cafeteria advocating violence against gays.

Mark Stroh—“Many back Haverford High club at meeting following hate arrest”— Philadelphia Inquirer, November 3

Another AOL Scandal

scase.jpg - 4.58 K Pupils in PR 101 are taught that one of the surest ways to quash a bad-press headache is to admit the problem as soon as possible and get it off the headlines. Witness the suddenly contrite WorldCom CEO Bernie Ebbers' use of this strategy in today's media. But when the media began reporting that America Online honcho Steve Case and his wife forked over $8.3 million to support a parochial school affiliated with a staunchly anti-gay ministry, the couple took the first train to Denial -- and now what started as a small story is getting national play.
