GLAAD's Laura Watch
The end of the year means best-of lists by many of the nation's TV, film
and music critics. Not surprisingly, Dr. Laura has figured prominently
in last year's worst-of-TV lists, including:
USA Today
On Dec. 26, TV critic Robert Bianco ranked Dr. Laura as one of the two
worst shows of the year, second only to Big Brother, saying, "Is it
unhealthy to enjoy someone else's failure, no matter how well deserved? If
I want to know the answer, I'll ask a real doctor."
Los Angeles Times
TV columnist Brian Lowry cited Paramount's syndication division's
mishandling of Dr. Laura in his Dec. 27 year-end wrap-up of 2000's TV
downers:
"The surprising part is Paramount executives seemed so unprepared
for the firestorm caused and ill will engendered -- including among many of
its employees -- by providing Schlessinger, whose comments on her radio
show angered many gay rights activists, with a TV forum," Lowry wrote.
"Schlessinger certainly has the right to speak her mind, but Paramount
officials either didn't do their homework or arrogantly thought they could
ignore their critics, mishandling the situation in a manner that left them
under siege through much of 2000."
