GAY CHINESE TO MEET IN HONG KONG Chinese tongzhi (gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgendered people) will stage their second annual conference February 5-9 in Hong Kong. Delegates are expected from China, Japan, Macao, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and several non-Asian nations. Topics to be discussed include gender politics, racism, AIDS, tongzhi identity, coming out, and art and culture. There will be cultural performances, video screenings, book and information exhibits, hiking and a harbor cruise. AUSSIE LESBIAN CLUB DISCRIMINATED AGAINST A MAN The Equal Opportunity Tribunal in Sydney, Australia, has found that the now-closed lesbian club Sirens illegally ejected a customer because of his gender. The women who owned the club, Jane Stephens and Christine Bradley, were ordered to apologize to banking executive Brett Halliwell, 32, but no other punishment was handed down. Stephens and Bradley claimed Halliwell was kicked out because he did not pay the cover charge, pushed a bouncer and behaved aggressively, but the tribunal said his behavior was merely "assertive" and that he was removed because he is male. Bradley told reporters after the ruling, "I think we'll apologize if we've hurt his feelings but I don't think I'll be apologizing for any of my actions because I don't think I did anything wrong."
