Zimbabwe--A January list of prisoners who are scheduled to receive President Robert Mugabe's pardons includes Jefta Dube, the former policeman convicted of murdering a co-worker, Patrick Mashiri, who'd called him the "wife" of former President of Zimbabwe, Canaan Banana.

Dube, said to have gone murderously berserk over the insinuation that he could possibly have been playing a so-called female's role in bed, was also first in line—from jail--to accuse the former president of practicing sodomy on him in such a fashion that he felt he'd actually become Banana's "sex slave."

Former President Banana, heterosexually married and a Methodist clergyman, was recently convicted of sodomy in a highly publicized trial.

Banana's successor, President Mugabe, is, perhaps, the world's most vocal homophobic head of state. Mugabe says he believes persons who experience same-sex love and affection are worse than pigs and dogs.

Mugabe regularly releases specific prisoners who demonstrate good intent or, on occasion, he celebrates Zimbabwe's holidays with such releases. Jefta Dube has now served two years of a 10-year sentence following his killing the fellow lawman who'd ridiculed him.

Dube claimed in his trial that he'd been traumatized by the three years (1983-86) of humiliation he'd received under Banana as his aide de camp, and that he'd snapped and shot his victim when he saw how his humiliation had advanced to the status of an outright joke.

Before snapping, he'd reportedly begged his law enforcement superiors, he said, to remove him from Banana's quarters, but he charged they showed no pity for his "sex slave's" plight.

Canaan Banana

Dube, in fact, felt so humiliated spending a chunk of his life a receptacle for Banana's urges, that not only did he surrender himself to the inevitability of being the President's "sex slave", he reported, but that he'd surrendered himself also to drugs and alcohol after "exhausting all avenues for help."

President Banana, who proclaims his own innocence, and who has returned to face sentencing after temporarily leaving Zimbabwe after being found guilty, awaits, under house arrest, his own fate: to be decided January 18.
