Washington, D.C.—On Friday evening, January 19, The National Gay and
Lesbian Task Force and the National Stonewall Democrats will host "Applauding
Progress," an event to honor the gains made by the gay, lesbian, bisexual and
transgender community under the outgoing Clinton-Gore Administration.
"President Clinton appointed more openly gay and lesbian people to his
administration than all previous presidents combined," said NGLTF
Executive Director Elizabeth Toledo.
"These appointments resulted in real, tangible gains for our community--more
funding for local community centers, more funding for non-violence projects
and more access for our community into the highest echelons of government."
"As we face an uncertain future on the federal level, it is important
to realize the concrete and historic advances we have made during the past
eight years," said Michael Colby, Executive Director of National Stonewall
Democrats.
"The next four years will mark a dramatic shift to organizing
at the local level and advancing GLBT issues through true grassroots
activism."
Honored guests at the event will include:
Virginia M. Apuzzo, Vic Basile, Keith Boykin, Q. Todd Dickinson Romy Diaz, Jr.,
Jay Fisette, Rep. Barney Frank, House Minority Leader Richard Gephardt, Jim
Graham, Doug Hattaway, Bob Hattoy, Fred Hochberg, Elaine Kaplan, Bruce A.
Lehman, David Mixner, Rep. Jim Moran, Julian Potter, Robert Rabin, Richard Socarides,
Andrew Tobias, Jeff Trammell, Washington, D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams,
and the many openly gay and lesbian appointees who have served in the
Clinton Administration.
