'Ninja Slasher' Attacks
Fifth Victim in Brooklyn Park

hatecrimesnew.jpg - 8.18 K New York, New York—A 55-year old gay male, a social worker, suffered a slashed throat, and stab wounds to his chest and back on Monday in Brooklyn's Prospect Park.

It was the fifth of such attack in the Prospect Park area since June. Politicians, gay activists and police all describe Monday's attack as “bias motivated.”

The name of the victim, who remains in stable condition, was not, at first, released. Reports from other victims indicate that the attacker dances to and fro making Ninja-style movements as he wields his knife, and thus has been named “The Ninja Slasher”

Police say they believe that all five Prospect Park attacks are related. Previously, the attacks occurred in a decades-old gay cruising area during the early morning hours. The latest slashing, however, took place in afternoon daylight, a half mile distant from that cruising area. The Ninja Slasher surprised his victim from behind.

Through its mayor, New York City has officially offered a $12,000 reward for the capture of the wanna-be serial killer. The most recent attack, reportedly, was more vicious than had been the previous ones.

Two groups, the New York City Gay and Lesbian Anti-Violence Project and People of Color in Crisis took immediate action, posting and distributing warning flyers and giving out whistles to men walking in the vicinity of the attacks.

The Ninja Slasher is reputed to be black, in his mid-40's and approximately 6 foot 1, 185 pounds. He was said to be wearing a lengthy overcoat. Black activists warned police that they must not, as has happened in recent times, assume that any African- American male in the vicinity is the suspect.

Councilman Stephen DiBrienza promised to effect an increase in park patrols, calling the crime “an unfortunate, outrageous and despicable attack." The councilman told reporters that the incident was, in fact, an attack on the entire Brooklyn neighborhood.
