These Awards were created to honor individuals and projects in the media and entertainment industries for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives. This year, GLAAD expects more than 5,000 to attend the four ceremonies, raising more than $2.3 million for the organization's work.

Nominees were published, released or broadcast between January 1 and December 31, 1999. Nearly 1,000 entries were considered in 24 categories. Nominees in the lesbian, gay , bisexual and transgender media categories will be announced in February.

Founded in 1985, GLAAD is a national organization with a staff of 28 and an annual budget of $4.6 million. GLAAD has offices in Atlanta, Kansas City, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.

More than 100 corporate sponsors are expected, with Absolut Vodka as the Presenting Sponsor and David Bohnett and the Michael Palm Foundation as Platinum Underwriters.
