Fort Lauderdale's Gay Community |

"Way before it was politically correct," note the Gay and Lesbian Commmunity Center's officials, "Tammy Faye was including gay people in her message of Love and acceptance." Tammy Faye has said: "How could I not love a community that is so good to me? I think I have a lot in common with the Gay population. They identify with me and I certainly identify with what they are still going through." GayToday editor Jack Nichols, who organized a Florida-based anti-Falwell picket in 1987, recalls a strategy developed by the Sunshine State protesters. "Symbolically, we embraced Tammy Faye and her beleaguered former husband, Jim.," he said, "because we were certain that Falwell, who'd just taken over as the CEO of the PTL, wouldn't care if gays picketed him so we pretended instead to be Jim and Tammy supporters. "Our picket signs demanded, 'Bring Back Jim and Tammy!' while we noted that "Jim and Tammy are human. Why isn't Falwell?' I dressed in a suit and tie, as did the others, and we carried large Bibles. The Orlando Sentinel covered us as serious supporters of Jim and Tammy and TV cameras found me bellowing into their lens: 'Falwell is the money changer in the temple!' "
