Sydney, Australia--A dangerous batch of ecstasy distributed at a rave party here has left one dead and ten hospitalized. The 26-year old dead man, believed to be a supermarket manager, is from Ryde He passed away at 4:30 a.m. at the festival near Campbelltown. Health experts and police have launched an investigation to determine whether the drug, which felled victims attending the Happy Valley Full Moon Festival in southwestern part of the city, contained dangerously high levels of LSD and methylamphetamine, or whether it was a Dutch import laced with poisonous strychnine. Sydney police are also voicing concern about the recent sales of deadly new amphetamines in the city which, they say, could cause more deaths.
Friends of the dead man, who paid $60 for three-day tickets, were "pretty freaked out," according to Sydney newspapers. "This sends a very clear warning to current and potential users that there is a lot of weird stuff going around and if they are considering using it they should be so incredibly careful," said Paul Dillon, of the National Drug and Alcohol Research Center. "Normally we don't know what is in ecstasy," he explained. "This time we can safely say there is some particularly dangerous stuff out there, more so than ever before." |
