Action Alert: Telephone 2 Friends
About Proposition 22

Compiled by GayToday

noonknighphone.jpg - 9.26 K The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force is urging its 35,000 members nationwide to call two friends and family members in California today and urge them to vote against Proposition 22.

The "Call Two Against Proposition 22" campaign is being waged through both phone banks and email, and is the latest step NGLTF has taken to try to mobilize voters in California.

"Proposition 22 is discriminatory and divisive," said NGLTF Executive Director Kerry Lobel. "It is a blatant, bigoted attack against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people and their families. I am asking every member of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force - regardless of where they live - to call everyone they know in California and do whatever it takes to get them to the polls (tomorrow) next Tuesday."

Beginning early last year, NGLTF has taken a number of steps against Proposition 22, also known as the Knight Initiative. NGLTF has contributed $40,000 to the No on Knight campaign, and has conducted a number of voter identification trainings in Northern California.

In addition, NGLTF made Proposition 22 a focal point of its annual Creating Change conference in Oakland last November, and led 50 volunteers into the streets of Oakland to canvass volunteers.

Finally, NGLTF convened the National Religious Leadership Roundtable in Orange County to mobilize clergy against the initiative, which would ban the state of California from recognizing same-sex marriages performed in other states.

In addition to phone banking and action alerts, NGLTF has sending post cards to all of its California members to urge them to turn out on March 7.

"If the election is close, we can win with turnout," Lobel said. "Remember: your vote is your voice."
