By Rex Wockner International News Report A new gay/lesbian student group at Hong Kong's Chinese University is receiving an unfriendly welcome, the South China Morning Post reported. Fellow students have ripped up the Tongzhi Culture Society's posters and dumped copies of its magazine. The first gay group at any Hong Kong university, TCS was recognized by the student union last month. Another group called Alliance to Protect Ethics promptly put up posters denouncing TCS and admitting to stealing and throwing away the group's publication, called "M.Come." "We found the magazines dirty and meaningless, and they encouraged insane homosexuality and sex abuse," the Alliance poster said. "These seriously affect the psychological health of people." TCS spokeswoman Franco Lai Yuen-ki responded: "This is nothing to be scared of. Even gay sex is normal. We hope to promote correct messages about homosexuality on campus. But it seems there are students who dislike us. I'm not surprised as homosexuality is still taboo on campus." TCS does have some supporters. At a March 5 forum, the group's first formal activity, Sociology professor Chan Kin-man said: "No one should stop others in choosing their sexual orientation. And no violence should be used. Students should enjoy freedom of expression. It's bad to see some students dumping others' magazines in rubbish bins." |
