Judge Sauls: Violating Florida's Code
with Katherine Harris?

Compiled By GayToday

Judge N. Sanders Sauls: Not so impartial after all Tallahassee, Florida--Is Leon County Circuit Court Judge N. Sanders Sauls violating Florida's Code of Judicial Conduct by agreeing to speak at the June gathering in South Carolina of the rabidly right-wing group, Free Republic?

Oral Majority, along with other activist groups opposing what they call George W. Bush's “stolen” electoral victory, is urging Floridians to file complaints with the Florida Judicial Qualifications Commission, citing specifically “Canon 2: A Judge Shall Avoid Impropriety and the Appearance of Impropriety in all of the Judge's Activities; and Canon 7: A Judge or Candidate for Judicial Office Shall Refrain from Inappropriate Political Activity."

A judge or justice may be impeached and removed "by the Florida Legislature or by the Judicial Qualifications Commission and the Florida Supreme Court" for violating the state's Code of Judicial Conduct.

Sauls ruled against Al Gore and for George W. Bush in November's contentious presidential election. His decision was overturned by the Florida Supreme Court when it ordered recounts to proceed. The recounts were halted by the U.S. Supreme Court's "gang of five" who in effect, appointed Bush president.

Judge Sauls and Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris are now treated as political heroes by the far right-wing Free Republic. They have been invited to speak at The Second Annual Southeastern Free Republic Rally, scheduled June 22-24 at Seabrook Island, South Carolina.

Free Republic, according to Sauls' and Harris' critics, is the same group that disrupted and stopped Miami-Dade's vote count ordered during the hotly contested Election 2000. The Oral Majority's chair, Bob Kunst, referred to the to the threatening conservative group on that occasion as “a Right Wing Rent-a-Mob paid for by Verizon.”

In an April 12 letter to the Florida Judicial Qualifications Commission, Kunst wrote:

“We are demanding the impeachment of Judge Saul for violating the Code of Judicial Conduct and demand his immediate removal.”
