Anti-Gay Floridia
Politician's Neighbors Protest

By Mary Wilson

(Left to Right) Carla Josephson, Orlando NOW President; Karen Weinberg,Winter Park NOW President; Mary Wilson, Winter Park Legislative Vice President & Rainbow Democratic Club Vice Presisdent Mary Wilson, Legislative VP of Winter Park, Florida, National Organization for Women and Vice President of the Rainbow Democratic Club, an equal rights for gays club, held a "RECALL Trovillion" protest within shouting distance of the Republican State Representative's Central Florida home office. Representative Allen Trovillion had castigated four gay high school students who were meeting with him, on Equality Florida Youth Lobby Day 2001, to ask his support for the "Florida Dignity for All Students Act".

Trovillion said "You have to suffer the consequences of your actions,'' and "The Scripture says that no homosexual will see the Kingdom of God" and "I can't put it much straighter than that.'' Trovillion's daughter, Barbara Trovillion-Rushing is on the Orlando school board and stands with her father against any law to protect gay and trans-gender students. There was much rhetoric about holding her feet to the fire on her statements.

Mary Wilson said, "One person can say, this injustice, insult or outrage will not go unanswered." "One person can say, if I stand alone with a picket sign, I will have done right by my conscience." "But with today's email, I can invite a few like-minded friends to stand with me and voile' there are a hundred people holding up posters and rainbow flags."

And so it was; in three days the word got out and people came from as far away as Deerfield Beach, Lake Worth, Merritt Island and Fort Lauderdale. Some people registered to vote and others changed their party. Two of the young men spoke eloquently of the incident and others vowed to return home to have a "RECALL Trovillion" protest there.
