marching.jpg - 9.31 K Washington, DC -- The board of The Millennium March on Washington for Equality (MMOW) held quarterly meetings April 25 /26, discussing mobilization plans as well as the organizing of hundreds of thousands who are expected to march in the nation's capital on April 30, 2000.

New board members Geni Cowan of Sacramento California. And both Jose Ucles and Ingrid Duran of Washington, D.C. were welcomed as contributors to planning group which the MMOW claims is now extraordinarily "diverse".

In response to expressed concerns about its diversity, the MMOW "proudly" announced a makeup currently 60 percent people of color and 60 percent women.

Board members also discussed plans to broaden the structure of the March with additional points of entry for activists into planning sessions and to leading the event.

MMOW board members also held a significant discussion with representatives of the Ad Hoc Committee for an Open Process. The Ad Hoc Committee was formally invited, said MMOW, to serve on its national board.

The resignation of Kerry Lobel from the national board was also accepted. Ms Lobel met with MMOW co-chairs, stating, according to members, that she was leaving for personal reasons.

In her letter, published Tuesday in GayToday, Ms. Lobel, executive director for the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, raised issues which included the need for a more open process. She also spoke of worrisome accountability issues, and questioned the value of mass mobilization in a time when NGLTF's Equality Begins at Home—a localist approach—has been proving effective.

MMOW believes that it has already addressed Ms. Lobel's criticims and announced its regret that "she will not personally participate in the legacy of this historic event." Even so, it added, "We look forward to continued work with the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force."
