The Internet giant, Yahoo!, has been forced to retreat from sex censorship,
according to a UK-based organization, Press for Change. The company's policy
reversal was engineered by trans and gay activists, including non-sex oriented
groups.
Yahoo recently claimed to be removing 'Adult Content' from its
site but its response had sweeping effects for owners of discussion
lists of all kinds. Yahoo! simply removed all search facilities for
discussion lists using terms that included the sequence 's-e-x',
regardless of their context or the group's content. It meant that users
could no longer locate clubs based in Essex or Sussex in the UK!
Similarly, people seeking transsexual support groups also began drawing
a blank. With thousands of groups affected, a campaign was immediately
launched.
Krystyna Haywood, activist for Press for Change, a national, political,
educational and lobbying organization, and owner of a Yahoo discussion
list, argued that "The action of Yahoo Groups is scandalous and
tantamount to censorship
She explained that her Transsexual-UK e-mail list provided support, advice,
information and a safe environment for TS people to get together. The effect
of Yahoo's actions was to render this and many similar groups invisible to those
most in need of their help.
Krystyna pressed for support from the national media and other groups to
highlight the problem.
With the Trans-Yorks group, Press for Change, Peter Tatchell, and many
others in the UK and overseas backing campaign to get policy overturned,
Yahoo! were bombarded with e-mails and press attention.
