Members of an ad hoc coalition of local women's and gay groups joined 2,000 well-wishers who surrounded Lewis on Memphis's historic Beale Street. They cheered Lewis, made V for victory signs, and held up placards emblazoned with the words: "Victory to Lewis! Defeat Tyson's homophobia" and "Knock out Tyson's sexism & homo hatred". Lewis responded to the group's support with smiles and waves.
