Florida Teens Found Guilty
in Murder of Gay Man

flakiller.jpg - 9.88 K West Palm Beach, Florida—Steven Goedereis, 29 years old and 118 lbs., was beaten beyond recognition here in April 1998 and left for dead in front of a convenience store with his murderer's tennis shoe imprinted on his forehead. Why?

Goedereis had mistakenly told teenager, Bryan Donahue, 17, that he was "beautiful." Donahue and his sidekick, Billy Dodge, 18, saw to it that the gay man paid for this appreciative compliment with his life. Then Donahue robbed him.

Now both teens, convicted by a short-tempered jury, face lengthy prison terms. Donahue could be sentenced to permanent imprisonment for a second degree murder motivated by hate and for robbery. Bill Dodge, charged with third-degree murder motivated by hate, faces as much as thirty years jail time. Both are scheduled for sentencing on September 3.

Donahue's' attorney, Joe Atterbury, claimed that the teen's behavior had been defensive, that he was motivated by a fear of being sexually assaulted by the 118 lb. gay male. In fact, he said, of his client, "At 16, his manhood was tested."

State Attorney Renelda Mack replied: "All the defendant had to do was continue walking away…He wasn't in fear. He was in control. He was dominating the victim."

The murdered man's father, Steven Goedereis, Sr., told reporters, "There aren't any winners."
