Over a Million Attend |
Compiled By GayToday San Francisco, California - Over a million lesbians, gay males, bisexuals and transgendered people and their friends turned out here Sunday for the city's 31st annual gay pride parade. In accordance with a long-time San Francisco tradition, five-hundred Dykes on Bikes, led the parade, followed by a colorful assortment of people wearing ordinary clothes, nuns habits, leather costumes, feathers, and, in some cases, nearly nothing. Five-hundred rainbow-colored flags lined the route, beginning at Beale and Market Streets, and ending at the Civic Center where a festive street fair took place. One-hundred and eighty-two floats and bands took part, in what local newspapers called the city's largest-ever gay pride celebration. Attendees spent approximately $150 million on hotels and meals, say organizers.
The parade had its critics, those objecting to the commercialization of such gay movement events. They shook their heads disapprovingly as scantily clad youths wiggled their hips aboard a float sponsored by Smirnoff Vodka. |
